Why dry branches are the most expensive decor in New York

Why dry branches are the most expensive decor in New York

We once ran into a NY studio's Instagram — a small feather grass sheaf in a ceramic pot: $295. Ours — ~$10. Why the difference?

Inside the $295

  • Import (30–40%): feather grass from Ukraine, air freight, customs, Manhattan transport.
  • Studio rent (20–30%): $8000/mo for 40 sqm in Brooklyn.
  • Payroll (15%): florist $25–35/hr.
  • Marketing (10–15%): Instagram ads, influencers.
  • Packaging (5%): kraft boxes, ribbons, cards.
  • Profit (10–15%).

Pure plant cost: $15–20. Rest is logistics and infrastructure.

Inside 600 UAH here

  • Raw material from fields near Kamianets-Podilsky: ~120 UAH
  • Workshop rent spread across many products: ~60 UAH
  • Labor: ~90 UAH
  • Marketing: mostly self-done, no paid ads
  • Packaging + delivery: ~30 UAH

Strategic takeaway

We don't compete with NY. We compete with cheap IKEA dried flowers and suspicious Chinese imports — and we win on handmade quality.

The future belongs to local workshops with short cycles: field → dry → sell within 200 km. That's us.
