Can you wash dried flowers: the honest answer and what to do about dust

Can you wash dried flowers: the honest answer and what to do about dust

Dust is the #1 enemy of dried flowers. And the #1 reason people hesitate to buy. Honest answer: yes, dust settles. Yes, you can deal with it. No, don't wash with water.

Short answer

You can't wash in the classic sense — with water and soap. They'd lose shape, some would soak and rot. But there are 4 safe dust-removal methods we've tested personally.

Method 1 — hair dryer on cold

For: grasses, fluffy plants (pampas, feather, gypsophila).

Cold air, lowest speed, 20–30 cm away, blow. Dust lifts off. Do this outdoors or in the bathroom — otherwise it scatters everywhere.

Warning: never hot air! Heat makes plants brittle.

Method 2 — soft brush

For: small flowers, delicate details.

Use a soft makeup or watercolor brush. Gently stroke each flower from top down. Slow but gentlest.

Method 3 — compressed air can

For: all types, especially deep pockets.

The same can used for keyboards — quick, safe, no contact. 15 cm away, short bursts. Ideal for hard-to-reach spots.

Method 4 — plastic bag + dryer

Large bag, put the bouquet in, inflate, shake quickly. Dust ends up at the bottom. Sounds weird, works great.

What NOT to do

  • Wash with water.
  • Furniture polish.
  • Full-power vacuum.
  • Damp cloth.

Reduce dust from the start

Placement matters. Avoid airflow zones (fans, open windows, heaters). Closed glass displays are best. A simple glass cloche over the composition works too.
