Eucalyptus: how Australian leaves became the symbol of modern spa

Eucalyptus: how Australian leaves became the symbol of modern spa

Walk into any modern spa, wellness studio or upscale gym — you'll likely see a eucalyptus branch. Shower, reception, relaxation room. It's not by accident.

Origin

Eucalyptus comes from Australia, home to 700+ species. Aborigines used the leaves as antiseptic and for breathing. In the 19th century Europeans saw how fast it grows and how much water it absorbs — they planted it in swampy parts of Europe and America for drainage.

How it entered decor

1980s — American designers added eucalyptus to fresh bouquets for the scent. 2000s — spas used it for steam-room aromatherapy. 2015 — Instagram turned silver dollar eucalyptus into a global trend.

Why spa specifically

  1. Scent. Fresh, minty — subconscious association with health.
  2. Color. Silvery-green, neutral, fits anything.
  3. Shape. Round leaves on flexible stems — organic, no aggressive lines.

Varieties we work with

  • Cinerea — silver dollar, round leaves
  • Parvifolia — baby blue, smaller
  • Populus — large-leaved for big compositions

Glycerin stabilization

We stabilize eucalyptus in glycerin — the key step. Leaves soak from inside, stay soft, keep color and scent up to a year.
