The first reaction when clients see a protea — "is this real?". A large cup-like flower with leathery petals, looking like a sci-fi prop. Yet it's one of the oldest plants on the planet.
Family history
Proteas appeared roughly 75 million years ago — before the breakup of Gondwana. Which is why today they grow in Africa, Australia and South America alike. The genus is named after Proteus, the Greek god who could take any form — a nod to the family's huge diversity (1400+ species).
Why it only grows in South Africa
Most commercial varieties are grown in the Cape Province of South Africa. Specific climate — mild winter, dry summer, poor soils. Protea is adapted precisely to that.
National flower of South Africa
The King Protea (Protea cynaroides) is the most famous species. National flower of South Africa, shown on the coat of arms and coins. Flower heads 15–20 cm across make it one of the largest blooms in nature.
How we bring it to Ukraine
We buy in batches from Kenyan plantations specialized in European export. Flown in sealed temperature-controlled boxes. A direct shipment from South Africa is too expensive for our volume.

Stabilization
Fresh protea dries naturally upright. Petals become woody but keep their shape and color for 2–3 years — deep red, burgundy, pink.
Composing with it
Protea is a dominant. Don't pair it with other big blooms — support it with linear elements: eucalyptus, feather grass, dry wheat. One bud in a large vase is a complete composition.
Symbolism
Courage, transformation, resilience. In flower language — "you have the courage to be yourself". Often chosen for weddings as a symbol of strong marriage.
