Allergies and dried flowers: what's safe and what to avoid

Allergies and dried flowers: what's safe and what to avoid

We hear this regularly: "I'm allergic to flowers — can I have dried ones?" Short answer: yes, almost all dried flowers are safer than fresh. But there are nuances.

Why dried is usually safer

  • Pollen: mostly gone after drying, and inactive.
  • Essential oils: weaker, barely detectable in air.
  • Chemistry: with a good workshop — zero.
  • Mold: doesn't exist in a dry plant.

What can still react

  • Dust buildup — clean more often if you have dust allergies.
  • Mold in damp storage — throw out affected bouquets.
  • Natural scent (lavender) — individual sensitivity. Start small.
  • Latex stabilizers some makers use on pampas. We don't.

Safest picks

Wheat, feather grass, dry branches. Eucalyptus often helps with colds instead of triggering.

Pets

Mostly non-toxic to cats and dogs, unlike many fresh flowers (lilies kill cats). Watch out for pampas sharp leaves and small swallowable elements.
