Chamazulene and α-bisabolol are anti-inflammatory compounds that calm stomach and gut lining. A compress soothes irritated skin, insect bites and tired eyes.

In Ukrainian tradition rose hips on the hedge guard against the evil eye. Rose-hip syrup was given to children who didn't thrive.

Yarrow

The soldier's herb that stops blood

Achilleine is a blood-clotting compound; the Latin name honours Achilles, who is said to have used it for wounded soldiers. An infusion rinses bleeding gums and minor cuts.

The Ukrainian folk name is «heart herb». In Soviet times sold in every pharmacy — a classic cheap tincture people drank after arguments and work stress.

Old Ukrainian name «sceptre-herb». Dry stems with flowers were dipped in fat and lit as torches — hence the English name.
