Relaxes muscles, eases dull headaches, lowers mildly elevated blood pressure. Linalool and linalyl acetate are the two key compounds with documented effects on the nervous system.

Extends deep-sleep phase, helps with chronic anxiety. A lavender sachet under the pillow is the simplest nightly ritual.

Ukrainische Tradition

In the Carpathians lavender was layered into linen chests — against moths and for fragrance. Young women gave it to men as a sign of affection.

Burned as incense inside the house at Pentecost — cleansing before summer. Woven into bridal wreaths for healthy offspring.

Chamazulene and α-bisabolol are anti-inflammatory compounds that calm stomach and gut lining. A compress soothes irritated skin, insect bites and tired eyes.

Babies were bathed in chamomile infusion for rashes and colic. The "loves me, loves me not" divination — old chamomile folklore.

The red colour of the fruit, the smell of the tea, grandmother's-kitchen memory — warms the mind on a grey day.

Ukrainische Tradition

In Ukrainian tradition rose hips on the hedge guard against the evil eye. Rose-hip syrup was given to children who didn't thrive.

Yarrow

Achillea millefolium · Asteraceae

The soldier's herb that stops blood

Achilleine is a blood-clotting compound; the Latin name honours Achilles, who is said to have used it for wounded soldiers. An infusion rinses bleeding gums and minor cuts.

Yarrow traditionally supports inner balance — drunk when you need to act decisively without panic.

Ukrainische Tradition

In the Carpathians a dried bunch hung above the cradle — against illness and childhood fear. Also tucked into soldiers' shoes.

Ukrainische Tradition

In Ukrainian tradition — a women's, ritual herb. Girls placed oregano under the pillow during the pre-wedding «maidens' evening». «Mother-herb» in folk songs.

Ukrainische Tradition

The Ukrainian folk name is «heart herb». In Soviet times sold in every pharmacy — a classic cheap tincture people drank after arguments and work stress.

Echinacea arrived in Ukraine in the 1950s from the USA via the Kyiv Botanical Garden. Today — one of the most-used plants in Ukrainian pharmacy.

Folk name — «cat root» (cats really love the smell). Village grandmothers kept a bottle of tincture «for a rainy day».

Classic homemade syrup: a few blossom clusters + lemon + sugar + water — added to water like natural soda. Taken during colds as a natural remedy.

A candle-like flower spike up to 2 metres in July at the roadside — one of the most dramatic Ukrainian plants. In decor — a vertical sculptural accent.

Ukrainische Tradition

Old Ukrainian name «sceptre-herb». Dry stems with flowers were dipped in fat and lit as torches — hence the English name.
