Warnungen

Was NICHT kombinieren

St. John's wort + medications

The most important of all prohibitions. St. John's wort speeds up the liver metabolism (CYP3A4) of half of modern medications — antidepressants weaken, birth-control pills stop working, warfarin becomes dangerous. If you're on any ongoing medication, don't self-prescribe.

Thyme + Oregano

Both contain thymol and carvacrol — combined dosage crosses the safety threshold, causes heartburn and mucous membrane irritation. Drink separately, on alternate days.

Oregano + Pregnancy

Oregano stimulates the uterus. In folk tradition — «abortifacient herb». Categorically forbidden during all trimesters. During lactation — only if prescribed.

Mint + low blood pressure

Mint dilates vessels and lowers pressure. With chronic hypotension, every cup increases morning weakness. Choose lemon balm instead.

Raspberry leaf + early pregnancy

Raspberry leaf contains uterine-toning compounds. In the third trimester this is beneficial (prepares for birth); in the first, it may cause loss.

Gesondert

What rose hips actually is

Rose hips are the fruit of the wild rose (*Rosa canina*) that grows in hedgerows and along roadsides across Ukraine. Botanically these aren't berries but hypanthia — the swollen flower base with seeds inside. The red-orange colour is from carotenoids, the same as in carrots.

The main value is vitamin C. Dried rose hips contain 20× more vitamin C than lemons. Plus iron-absorbing bioflavonoids, tocopherols (vitamin E), organic acids and pectin. The best natural winter vitamin support from the Ukrainian forest.

How to brew properly. The seeds contain irritating hairs on the mucous membrane — remove them, or don't crush the fruit. Pour 80 °C water (not boiling!) over whole fruits, steep in a thermos for 8 hours. Boiling water destroys up to 60% of the vitamin C. Ideal dosage is 3 tablespoons of dried hips per 500 ml of water.

What to avoid. Don't boil rose hips long — vitamin C disappears. Don't sweeten with sugar — put a teaspoon of honey in already-warm (not hot) tea. Don't drink on an empty stomach — acids irritate the lining.

For children. Rose-hip syrup is a classic Ukrainian remedy for poor appetite and weak growth. Grandmother's recipe: 1 kg fruit + 1 kg sugar + 1 L water, simmer to thickness, store in a jar in the fridge. A teaspoon in the morning.
